March and April are always such busy times in a garden club. Many of us are volunteering at and participating in the Boston Flower and Garden Show. Our Art in Bloom designers and a small group of club interns are busy planning their floral arrangement design for this year’s MFA Fundraising Event on April 30 - May 2. Our Civic Beautification Chair is about to work out the details with the Quincy Parks Department Director for our Intersection Planter project at the Adams Street Bridge. Our Youth and Conservation Committees are working with the Lincoln Hancock School on an Arbor Day tree planting event. We have just begun a collaboration with the Adams Shore Library restoring their indoor plant collection with succulents, and our Horticulture volunteers are working with Historic New England to improve our second year garden at the Josiah Quincy House.
Our Conservation Town Brook Sub Committee has been partnering with the Quincy Environmental Network (QEN) for the past two years and most recently organizing public opinion in opposition to the Street-Works/City of Quincy plan for the Re-Location of Town Brook. We will be co-hosting an Informational Community Meeting on March 29 (7 pm) at the Thomas Crane Library to present our option for a more successful healthy brook, one which deals realistically with all of the pros and cons. We invite all those citizens with questions and concerns to attend.
Our monthly meetings at Wollaston Congregational Church have been well attended and full of information for gardeners and floral designers alike. Our remaining two meetings (Thursday, April 28 (day) – “Chocolate: From Tree to Table” and Thursday, May 19 (evening) – “Rose Lecture: The Basics of Rose Growing”) are open to the public. We are now in the process, until May 31st, of membership renewal, dues payment & committee selection. Now is also an excellent time for new members to join the club.
We have a number of field trips and workshops coming up soon for members (“Succulents” on 3/28 at Espousal Center, “Historic Preservation” on 3/29 at the Espousal Center, Tri-Meeting “Container Gardening” on 4/27 at Quincy Yacht Club and “Art in Bloom” on 4/2 at the MFA, Boston). Club sponsored workshops on “Spring Floral Design” (4/12) and “Plant Propagation: Dividing in a Master Gardener’s Garden” (4/13 & 4/30) are planned. Details for all these events are in the club yearbook/directory.
Belonging To a garden club is a wonderful opportunity for learning. This season club members have attended Environmental
Studies school, Garden Study school, Master Gardener Training, and Flower Show Judge’s school. The ground/soil is getting softer and more malleable; and there are so many perennials to divide. We, Wollaston Garden Club gardeners, are geting ready for our annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 21 (10 am to noon).
